Or why I consider myself to be a Latino trapped in a gringo body

Presentation by Mark Mikolas

In In the 1950s and 60s, we had little more impression of Latin America than donkeys, sombreros, and siestas. Then, almost 60 years ago, I quit college in my senior year and hitchhiked to Alaska, but it was winter and the Alcan highway was closed, so I headed south to await spring. Was there really a pyramid in Mexico? I thought I’d go see. I crossed the border at Nuevo Laredo and ¡Ay, caramba! A part of me felt like it was coming home, not leaving it. As a result, I have returned again and again to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. These photos attempt to show a little of what has drawn me so enduringly to these rich lands.
