Shorebird Field Workshop

A One Day Trip to Plum Island, MA

With noteworthy exceptions, especially this year, we don’t see very many shorebirds here in Southeastern Vermont. Soheil Zendeh* will lead SeVAS on a birding trip to Plum Island, MA to look for shorebirds. The trip will guide us and help us appreciate, and learn to identify shorebirds especially in their Fall plumage. The trip will last 4-5 hours to be followed by lunch in town (separate checks). We will meet at 7:30 AM at the Mass Audubon Joppa Flats Education Center located at 1 Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport near the entrance to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. There, we will carpool, intending to limit the number of cars and to ensure that in each vehicle there is one person in possession of a National Parks Pass. We will depart Joppa Flats Education Center at 7:45AM. We will gather first at the very end of Plum Island in the parking area of Sandy Point Reservation. Sandy Point is part of the Massachusetts State Parks system and not a Federal Wildlife Refuge. We have some Massachusetts State Park passes, but if necessary, the entrance fee to the reservation is $5 per car. Some short distance walking on sand will be necessary. After birding that area we will head back towards the refuge entrance to spend some time birding at the salt pannes. If you have a spotting scope please bring it so we aren’t queuing up too deeply for views.

There are no guarantees whenever we go birding but that and the novel or unusual find is part of the excitement and enjoyment of birding.

* Soheil Zendeh has been a member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club since 1981, is an editor, field trip leader, recipient of the Mass Audubon award for environmental actions, has various memberships in birding and conservation organizations, has produced publications, and conducts and organizers numerous birding activities. And Soheil is a pleasure to go birding with.
